Count words in a .docx without opening Word

Words are counted between spaces

Any run of characters between spaces or line breaks counts as a word, so numbers and hyphenated words count once. The body text, including tables, is counted.

  • Paragraphs are counted as blocks separated by blank lines, which may differ from Word's paragraph count.

Counts may differ slightly from Word

Word, Google Docs and this counter treat dashes, slashes and footnotes a little differently, so expect small differences. Headers and footers aren't counted. When a limit is strict, stay a few words under.
