Export an Excel sheet as CSV

Bank imports, accounting software, mailing tools, databases and many upload forms accept CSV but not .xlsx. XLSX to CSV converts the first worksheet to a UTF-8 CSV file. Hidden columns and rows are still exported, because CSV has no concept of hiding.

Choose the delimiter your target app expects

Comma is standard. Choose semicolon for apps set up for European regional formats, where the comma is the decimal separator. Tab-separated output is handy for pasting into other tools. Formulas are exported as their calculated values.

First sheet only, values not formatting

Only the first worksheet is converted; move the sheet you need to the first position in Excel if necessary. Colours, merged cells and number formatting aren't kept, and dates may come out in a standard ISO format rather than as displayed. UTF-8 keeps Nepali, Hindi and other scripts intact, though older Excel versions may need Data › From Text to open it correctly.

Which sheet is converted?

The first worksheet. Move the sheet you need to the first tab in Excel if it isn't already.

Are formulas kept?

CSV can't store formulas, so each cell's calculated value is exported.

Why do Nepali or Hindi characters look broken in Excel?

The CSV is UTF-8. Some Excel versions assume another encoding when you double-click a CSV; use Data › From Text/CSV and pick UTF-8.

Should I use a comma or semicolon delimiter?

Comma unless the importing app expects semicolons, which is common with European regional settings.

Why did my dates or leading zeros change?

CSV stores values, not formatting. Dates may use a standard format, and apps that open the CSV may drop leading zeros.
