How to convert WAV to MP3

Drop the WAV and press Convert. It's encoded as a 192 kbps MP3 with the LAME encoder, loaded the first time you use it. Stereo CD-quality WAV is about 10 MB per minute; the MP3 is about 1.4 MB per minute, roughly seven times smaller.

Step by step

  1. 01Drop the WAV file.
  2. 02Optionally drag the waveform handles to keep only part.
  3. 03Press Convert and download the MP3.

WAV versus MP3 sizes

WAV stores uncompressed audio, so size depends only on length: about 10 MB per minute for 44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo. MP3 at 192 kbps uses about 1.4 MB per minute regardless of content.

  • 3-minute song: about 30 MB as WAV, about 4.3 MB as MP3.
  • 1-hour recording: about 600 MB as WAV, about 86 MB as MP3.

When to keep the WAV

MP3 is lossy. 192 kbps sounds transparent to most listeners, but if you're still editing, mixing or mastering, keep the WAV as your master and make MP3s for sharing.
