Compress a video for Discord

Set to 10 MB, Discord's free upload limit when this page was written. Check the current limit if yours is different.

Counted with the browser's Performance API during the last job. It sees every request the page makes, but not what is inside them, so anything that is not a static download is counted above.

To check yourself: open DevTools → Network, clear the list, run the tool, and inspect each request. None will contain your file. You can also switch to offline after the page loads; tools whose engine is already downloaded keep working.

How to get a video under Discord's limit

Drop the clip and press Compress. The tool divides the 10 MB budget by the clip's length to get a bitrate, keeps a little room for the MP4 container, encodes an H.264 MP4 that Discord plays inline, and checks the final size. If the first pass lands over, it re-encodes once at a lower bitrate.

Step by step

  1. 01Trim the clip to the moment you want to share first: shorter clips look far better at 10 MB.
  2. 02Drop the video on the tool. The 10 MB target is already set.
  3. 03Leave Resolution on Auto so the picture size matches the bitrate.
  4. 04Download and drag the MP4 into Discord.

Discord's upload limit changes

Discord lowered the free limit from 25 MB to 10 MB in 2024, and Nitro and boosted servers allow more. Limits change, so check the number Discord shows when an upload fails and type it into the Custom field if it differs.

What fits in 10 MB

About 80 megabits in total, shared by every second of the clip. As a rough guide that is around half a minute at decent 1080p, about a minute at 720p, or several minutes at 480p; fast motion needs more. Auto resolution steps the picture down when the bitrate gets thin so it stays sharp rather than blocky.

  • Game clips with fast motion need more bits: trim hard.
  • Remove the audio if it doesn't matter; that frees ~1 MB a minute for the picture.

How "10 MB" is counted

This page aims at 10,000,000 bytes or less. Upload forms disagree on what 10 MB means: some count 10,000,000 bytes, others 10,485,760 (1 MB = 1,024 × 1,024 bytes). A file of 10,000,000 bytes or less passes either rule, so you can type the limit exactly as the form writes it. The result shows the exact byte count. Windows File Explorer counts in 1,024s, so the same file can read slightly smaller there.

Questions

Will it play inline in Discord?

Yes. The output is H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4, the format Discord previews and plays in the chat on desktop and mobile.

Why is my compressed video blurry?

The clip is long for 10 MB. Trim it shorter, or accept a lower resolution. Every second shares the same budget.

Is my clip uploaded to compress it?

No. It's decoded and encoded by your browser's own video engine (WebCodecs). The meter on the tool stays at 0 B sent.
