Counted with the browser's Performance API during the last job. It sees every request the page makes, but not what is inside them, so anything that is not a static download is counted above.

To check yourself: open DevTools → Network, clear the list, run the tool, and inspect each request. None will contain your file. You can also switch to offline after the page loads; tools whose engine is already downloaded keep working.

Save the sound from a video as an audio file

Sometimes only the audio matters: a recorded lecture or interview to listen to on the go, a talk to send for transcription, or your own performance to edit. Video to MP3 extracts the sound track, all of it or just the part you select, as MP3, M4A or WAV.

  • Listening to a recorded lecture, webinar or meeting as audio.
  • Sending a recording to a transcription service, or editing it in an audio app.
  • Keeping the sound of your own music or speech recording.

MP3, M4A or WAV

MP3, the default, re-encodes the sound at 192 kbps with the LAME encoder, loaded the first time you use it; it plays on every phone, car stereo and player. M4A copies the original AAC audio without re-encoding when the video has AAC, as most phone and camera videos do, so it is bit-for-bit the original sound and takes seconds; other codecs, such as the Opus audio in many WebM files, are re-encoded to AAC at 192 kbps. WAV is uncompressed 16-bit audio, about 10 MB per minute of stereo, for editing. Drag the timeline handles to keep only part, or leave them at the ends for the whole track. An estimated size is shown for each format.

Before you use the file

A video without a sound track has nothing to extract, and the tool says so before you start. MP3 is lossy, so every later re-save loses a little more; keep M4A or WAV if you will edit further. Only extract audio from videos you made or have the right to use.

  • Play the start and end to check the range.
  • Check the length matches the part you selected.
  • MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV up to 2 GB are supported; AVI, WMV and FLV aren't.

Video to MP3: questions

What bitrate is the MP3?

192 kbps, which sounds close to the original for speech and most music.

MP3 or M4A: which should I pick?

M4A when the video's audio is AAC (most phone and camera videos): it's copied without re-encoding, so there's no quality loss. MP3 when a device or app only accepts MP3.

Can I save only part of the audio?

Yes. Drag the timeline handles to the part you want before extracting.

Why does it say there's no audio?

The video has no sound track, such as a muted screen recording, so there is nothing to extract.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The audio is extracted and encoded in your browser.
