Choose a photo with a clear subject. People, products and pets work best.

Cut a person, product or pet out of a photo's background

A clean cut-out is what you need for a profile picture, a product listing on a white background, a team page, or a logo placed onto a slide or poster. Remove Background runs a segmentation model in your browser: a portrait model for people, and a general-purpose model for products, pets and objects.

  • Making a profile or ID-style photo with a clean backdrop.
  • Putting team or speaker photos onto a consistent background.
  • Cutting a person out for a slide, poster or video thumbnail.
  • Removing a cluttered room or street from behind a portrait.
  • Product photos for a shop listing or marketplace (Any object mode).

Transparent PNG output

The model marks which pixels belong to the subject and makes the rest transparent. The result is saved as PNG so the transparency is kept. The first run downloads the model to your browser, which can take a moment; later runs are faster.

  • Photos with a clear subject and contrasting background give the cleanest edges.
  • Need a white or blue background for an ID photo? Passport Photo Maker handles that and the sizing.
  • Large photos are analysed at a reduced size and the cut-out mask is scaled back up, so the output keeps your original pixel dimensions.

Check hair, edges and see-through objects

Fine hair, fur, glass, shadows and subjects that match the background colour are the hardest cases; expect some halo or missing strands. Several people or objects may be treated as one subject or partly removed. The model runs on your device, so older phones may be slow on large photos. Person mode is trained on portraits; for products, animals and logos switch Subject to Any object, which is slower and needs a larger one-time download.

  • View the result on both a dark and a light background to spot leftover fringes.
  • Save as PNG; converting to JPG fills transparency with a solid colour.

Remove background: questions

Why does the first run take longer?

The first time, your browser downloads the background-removal model: about 26 MB for Person, about 88 MB for Any object. It's cached afterwards, so later images start faster.

Are my photos uploaded to remove the background?

No. The model runs in your browser; your photo is processed on your device and isn't sent to a server.

Why are the edges around hair rough?

Fine hair, fur and see-through objects are the hardest cases for any automatic cut-out. A photo with good light and a plain, contrasting background gives cleaner edges.

How do I put the cut-out on a white background?

For ID photos, Passport Photo Maker can set a white or light blue background and crop to size. Converting the PNG to JPG also fills transparent areas with white.

Does it work on product photos or pets?

Yes: switch Subject to Any object. It uses a general-purpose model (IS-Net, about 88 MB, downloaded once) instead of the portrait model, and takes several seconds per photo on a typical computer. White objects on pale backgrounds are the hardest case, so check the edges.

What format is the result?

PNG, so the transparent background is kept.
