How to make a photo 1080 × 1080

Drop the photo and download. The size is set to 1080 × 1080 with Crop to fill: the photo is scaled until it covers the square, the centre is kept and the extra edges are trimmed, so faces and objects keep their shape. Switch to Stretch only if you want the whole frame squeezed in.

Step by step

  1. 01Drop the photo; 1080 × 1080 and Crop to fill are set.
  2. 02Check the preview: the centre of the photo is what stays.
  3. 03If the subject is off-centre, crop it square yourself first with Crop image.
  4. 04Download and post.

Why 1080 × 1080 for Instagram

Instagram displays feed posts at up to 1080 pixels wide, so a 1080 × 1080 square is the classic square post size. Uploading exactly that size means Instagram doesn't have to scale your photo, which avoids one round of softening. Instagram also supports 4:5 portrait posts (1080 × 1350) if you want more height.

Crop to fill or stretch

Crop to fill keeps proportions and trims the edges of a non-square photo. Stretch keeps every pixel of the original but squashes it into the square, which makes people look wider or thinner. For photos of people, Crop to fill is almost always right.

  • Landscape photos lose some of the left and right sides.
  • Portrait photos lose some of the top and bottom.
  • Already-square photos are simply scaled.

Questions

Will my photo be stretched?

No. Crop to fill is on, so the photo keeps its proportions and only the edges are trimmed. Choose Stretch if you'd rather keep the whole frame.

What if my photo is smaller than 1080 pixels?

Resizing can't add detail the photo doesn't have, so a small source will look soft at 1080 × 1080. Start from the original camera photo for the sharpest result.

Can I resize several photos for a carousel?

Yes. Add them together and each is cropped and resized to 1080 × 1080.

Are my photos uploaded to resize them?

No. Resizing runs in this browser tab.
