Counted with the browser's Performance API during the last job. It sees every request the page makes, but not what is inside them, so anything that is not a static download is counted above.

To check yourself: open DevTools → Network, clear the list, run the tool, and inspect each request. None will contain your file. You can also switch to offline after the page loads; tools whose engine is already downloaded keep working.

How to make a photo under 1 MB

Drop the photo in. The compressor lowers quality in small steps until the file fits under 1 MB, and only reduces the pixel size for very large camera files. Most phone photos get there with quality changes you would struggle to see.

Step by step

  1. 01Add the photo or photos.
  2. 02The 1 MB target is set.
  3. 03Check the new size and look at the image full screen.
  4. 04Download.

Where 1 MB limits show up

Job and university application portals, visa and permit document uploads, support-ticket attachments, and forum or community sites. Mirrorless and DSLR files often start at 10–25 MB, so they need a real reduction; most phone photos only need a light one.

If the form also rejects the dimensions

Some forms limit both file size and pixel size. File size is measured in KB or MB; dimensions in pixels. If the error mentions width or height, resize the image first, then compress.

How "1 MB" is counted

This page aims at 1,000,000 bytes or less. Upload forms disagree on what 1 MB means: some count 1,000,000 bytes, others 1,048,576 (1 MB = 1,024 × 1,024 bytes). A file of 1,000,000 bytes or less passes either rule, so you can type the limit exactly as the form writes it. The result shows the exact byte count. Windows File Explorer counts in 1,024s, so the same file can read slightly smaller there.

Questions

What's the difference between 1 MB and 1,024 KB?

Some upload forms count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, others as 1,048,576. This page aims under 1,000,000 bytes, so the file passes either way. The exact byte count is shown next to the result.

Why is the compressed file smaller than 1 MB by a lot?

JPG quality moves in steps, and the next step up would have gone over. The result is the best quality that fits.

Can I compress RAW files?

No. Export RAW files to JPG in your camera app first, then compress them here.
