How to convert MKV to MP4

Drop the MKV and press Convert. Many MKV files already hold H.264 video, which is copied into the MP4 untouched, so it finishes in seconds with no quality loss. Other video codecs are re-encoded to H.264. Only the primary video track and the primary audio track are kept; subtitles and extra audio tracks are dropped.

Step by step

  1. 01Drop the MKV file.
  2. 02Press Convert. H.264 is copied; anything else is re-encoded.
  3. 03Download the MP4.

What's kept and what's dropped

MKV can hold many tracks at once: several audio languages, subtitle tracks, chapters. The MP4 made here contains one video track and one audio track, the file's primary ones. If you need a different language or the subtitles, this converter isn't the right tool for that file.

  • Kept: the main video and main audio track.
  • Dropped: subtitle tracks, additional audio tracks, chapters.

Why convert MKV

MKV is common for screen recordings, OBS output and downloaded video. Phones, smart TVs, PowerPoint, many editors and upload forms handle MP4 more reliably. When the video is H.264, switching container is quick and lossless.

Questions

Does MKV to MP4 lose quality?

Not when the video is H.264, which is copied unchanged. Other codecs are re-encoded to H.264, which changes quality very slightly.

Where did my subtitles go?

Subtitle tracks and extra audio tracks are not carried into the MP4. Only the primary video and audio are kept.

I recorded with OBS. Will this work?

Yes. OBS MKV recordings usually hold H.264 video, so they're copied into MP4 quickly without re-encoding.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The MKV is read and rewritten in your browser.
