Compress a video for WhatsApp

Counted with the browser's Performance API during the last job. It sees every request the page makes, but not what is inside them, so anything that is not a static download is counted above.

To check yourself: open DevTools → Network, clear the list, run the tool, and inspect each request. None will contain your file. You can also switch to offline after the page loads; tools whose engine is already downloaded keep working.

How to send a long video on WhatsApp

Videos sent as media have long been capped at 16 MB (larger files can go as a document, but then they don't play in the chat). Compressing to 16 MB here gives you control over resolution and quality instead of WhatsApp's own heavy squeeze.

Step by step

  1. 01Drop the video. The 16 MB target is set.
  2. 02Leave Resolution on Auto.
  3. 03Download the MP4 and share it to WhatsApp from your gallery or files.

Limits change

WhatsApp has raised limits for documents and sometimes for media; check what your app allows. If it takes more, type a larger size into Custom.

How "16 MB" is counted

This page aims at 16,000,000 bytes or less. Upload forms disagree on what 16 MB means: some count 16,000,000 bytes, others 16,777,216 (1 MB = 1,024 × 1,024 bytes). A file of 16,000,000 bytes or less passes either rule, so you can type the limit exactly as the form writes it. The result shows the exact byte count. Windows File Explorer counts in 1,024s, so the same file can read slightly smaller there.

Questions

Will it play on iPhone and Android?

Yes. H.264 MP4 with AAC audio plays on both.

Can I do this on my phone?

Yes, in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone (16.4 or newer). Long videos are faster on a computer.

Is the video sent to a server?

No. It's compressed in your browser.
