Counted with the browser's Performance API during the last job. It sees every request the page makes, but not what is inside them, so anything that is not a static download is counted above.
To check yourself: open DevTools → Network, clear the list, run the tool, and inspect each request. None will contain your file. You can also switch to offline after the page loads; tools whose engine is already downloaded keep working.

Number the pages of a merged or scanned document
Once you have merged several files into one submission, reviewers find it much easier to refer to "page 14". Adding numbers also helps with printed bundles, board packs and legal or tender documents where pages must be referenced.
- Numbering an application bundle after merging certificates and statements.
- Adding numbers to a thesis or report exported without them.
- Making printed handouts easier to reassemble if they get mixed up.
Plain numbers, centred at the bottom
Each page gets a small grey number (1, 2, 3…) centred near the bottom edge, starting at 1 on the first page. The numbers are added as real text on top of the existing content; nothing else on the page is changed.
- Numbering always starts at the first physical page, so remove or reorder cover pages first if needed.
Check the footer area
If a page already has content very close to the bottom edge (a footer, a scan border, a signature line), the number can overlap it. Landscape or rotated pages may place the number along a different edge.
- Look at a few pages with busy footers.
- Check the last number equals the total page count.
- Numbers are added on top of each page, so text stays selectable and file size barely changes.
Add page numbers to PDF: questions
Where are the page numbers placed?
Centred near the bottom edge of each page, in small grey text.
Can I start numbering from a different page?
Numbering always starts at 1 on the first page. If you don't want a number on a cover, remove the cover, number the rest, then merge the cover back in front.
Can I add "Page 1 of 10" style numbers?
Not currently. Numbers are plain: 1, 2, 3 and so on.
Will the numbers cover my footer?
They can if the page already has text very close to the bottom edge. Check pages with footers or scan borders before sending.
