Counted with the browser's Performance API during the last job. It sees every request the page makes, but not what is inside them, so anything that is not a static download is counted above.
To check yourself: open DevTools → Network, clear the list, run the tool, and inspect each request. None will contain your file. You can also switch to offline after the page loads; tools whose engine is already downloaded keep working.

How to get a PDF under 50 KB
Delete every page you don't need, add the PDF and run it. A short typed document may fit in text-safe mode. A scanned page is re-rendered as an image, and the compressor searches resolution and JPEG quality for the best result under 50 KB. 50 KB is realistic for one page and rarely works for more than two.
Step by step
- 01Remove extra pages first; each page costs bytes.
- 02Add the PDF; the 50 KB target is set.
- 03Check the size and zoom in on the smallest text.
- 04If it can't reach 50 KB, use the suggested size or split the file.
Why 50 KB is hard
The compressor won't go below about 60 dpi, the point where normal body text on an A4 or Letter page is still legible. A clean, single scanned page in grayscale often fits under 50 KB at that level; a colour photo of a page with shadows and a desk behind it often does not. When the target can't be reached without making text unreadable, it says so instead of handing you a blurry file.
Ways to make it fit
Most of a scan's size is the image, so making the image simpler matters more than any setting.
- Scan or save in grayscale if the form allows it.
- Crop the scan to the paper's edges before making the PDF.
- Delete blank pages and instruction pages the form doesn't need.
- Split a long document into separate uploads if the portal allows it.
How "50 KB" is counted
This page aims at 50,000 bytes or less. Upload forms disagree on what 50 KB means: some count 50,000 bytes, others 51,200 (1 KB = 1,024 bytes). A file of 50,000 bytes or less passes either rule, so you can type the limit exactly as the form writes it. The result shows the exact byte count. Windows File Explorer counts in 1,024s, so the same file can read slightly smaller there.
Questions
Why does it say 50 KB isn't possible?
Going smaller would make normal-size text unreadable. It shows the smallest readable size it found and offers to aim for that instead.
Can a 5-page PDF fit in 50 KB?
Only if the pages are typed text that compresses in text-safe mode. Five scanned pages almost never fit in 50 KB with readable text.
Will my text still be selectable?
Only if text-safe optimisation alone reaches 50 KB. Otherwise the pages are turned into images and the text can't be selected or searched.
Is the PDF sent to a server?
No. Rendering and compression run in this browser tab, and the network meter on the tool stays at 0 B.
