Counted with the browser's Performance API during the last job. It sees every request the page makes, but not what is inside them, so anything that is not a static download is counted above.

To check yourself: open DevTools → Network, clear the list, run the tool, and inspect each request. None will contain your file. You can also switch to offline after the page loads; tools whose engine is already downloaded keep working.

How to get a PDF under 100 KB

Add the PDF and run it. A typed one-page document often fits in text-safe mode. A scanned page is re-rendered as an image, and the compressor searches resolution and JPEG quality for the best result under 100 KB. 100 KB is tight: it works well for one or two pages, and rarely for ten.

Step by step

  1. 01Delete any pages the form doesn't need first.
  2. 02Add the PDF; the 100 KB target is set.
  3. 03Check the result size and zoom in on small print.
  4. 04If it can't reach 100 KB, use the suggested size or split the file.

What 100 KB can hold

The lowest resolution this tool will go to is about 60 dpi, the point where normal body text on an A4 or Letter page is still legible. How many scanned pages fit under 100 KB at that level depends on how busy they are, which is why one or two pages is realistic and ten is not. Plain white paper helps a lot; a photographed page with shadows and a wooden desk behind it costs more.

  • Crop scans to the paper before making the PDF.
  • Scan in grayscale if the form allows it.

How "100 KB" is counted

This page aims at 100,000 bytes or less. Upload forms disagree on what 100 KB means: some count 100,000 bytes, others 102,400 (1 KB = 1,024 bytes). A file of 100,000 bytes or less passes either rule, so you can type the limit exactly as the form writes it. The result shows the exact byte count. Windows File Explorer counts in 1,024s, so the same file can read slightly smaller there.

Questions

Why does it say the target is impossible?

Because going smaller would make normal-size text unreadable. It shows the smallest readable size and offers to aim for that instead.

Will my text stay selectable?

Only if text-safe optimisation alone reaches 100 KB, which happens for short typed documents. Otherwise pages become images.

Is the PDF uploaded to compress it?

No. Rendering and compression run in this browser tab, and the network meter on the tool stays at 0 B.
