Counted with the browser's Performance API during the last job. It sees every request the page makes, but not what is inside them, so anything that is not a static download is counted above.

To check yourself: open DevTools → Network, clear the list, run the tool, and inspect each request. None will contain your file. You can also switch to offline after the page loads; tools whose engine is already downloaded keep working.

Choose one video: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. Pick a few seconds of it on the next step.

How to turn an MP4 into a GIF

Drop the MP4 and drag the handles to choose the moment (the first 5 seconds are selected to start). Set frame rate and width; the size estimate updates as you go. The GIF uses one shared 256-colour palette with light dithering, and pixels that don't change between frames are stored once, which keeps files small.

Step by step

  1. 01Drop the MP4.
  2. 02Drag the handles to the moment you want; press Space to preview the loop.
  3. 03Set frame rate (12 is a good default) and width (480 px suits chats).
  4. 04Press Make GIF and download.

Keep GIFs small

GIF is an old format with no real video compression. Every extra second, frame or pixel adds weight. Under 10 seconds at 480 px and 12 fps usually stays below a few megabytes.

  • Lower fps before lowering width: 10–12 fps still looks smooth.
  • Turn off dithering for screen recordings and flat graphics.

Questions

Does the GIF have sound?

No. GIF can't hold audio. Use the MP4 if you need sound.

What's the longest GIF I can make?

60 seconds, but anything over 15 seconds gets large. You'll see a warning.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Frames are decoded and the GIF is encoded in your browser.
