How to make a video vertical for TikTok

Drop the video and save. It is cropped from the centre to a 9:16 frame and the short side is capped at 1080 pixels, giving the 1080 × 1920 TikTok recommends when the source is big enough. The video is never enlarged, and the bitrate is set from the new pixel count, so a smaller frame gives a smaller file.

Step by step

  1. 01Drop the video; the 9:16 frame and 1080p cap are set.
  2. 02Check that the subject sits near the middle of the shot.
  3. 03Save and download the MP4.
  4. 04Upload it to TikTok, Reels or Shorts.

What size comes out

Cropping to 9:16 keeps a vertical slice from the middle of the frame, so the result depends on the source. Because nothing is upscaled, a landscape 1080p video gives 608 × 1080. A landscape 4K video has enough pixels for a full 1080 × 1920. A video that's already vertical 1080 × 1920 keeps its size.

  • 1920 × 1080 landscape → 608 × 1080.
  • 3840 × 2160 (4K) landscape → 1080 × 1920.
  • 1080 × 1920 vertical → 1080 × 1920.

One file for three apps

TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts all use a 9:16 vertical frame, with 1080 × 1920 recommended. A video resized here can be posted to all three. Keep the action in the centre of the original shot, since the left and right sides of a landscape video are cut off.

Questions

Why is my TikTok video only 608 × 1080?

The source was landscape 1080p. A 9:16 slice of it is 608 pixels wide, and the tool doesn't enlarge video because upscaling adds no real detail. TikTok still plays it full-screen.

Can I choose which part of the frame is kept?

The crop is always taken from the centre. If the subject is to one side, a vertical crop won't follow it.

Which formats can I use?

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. The result is an H.264 MP4, or WebM where the browser can't encode H.264.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It's cropped and encoded in your browser with WebCodecs.
