Counted with the browser's Performance API during the last job. It sees every request the page makes, but not what is inside them, so anything that is not a static download is counted above.

To check yourself: open DevTools → Network, clear the list, run the tool, and inspect each request. None will contain your file. You can also switch to offline after the page loads; tools whose engine is already downloaded keep working.

Check a digital photo for a US visa application

US visa applications such as the DS-160 take a digital photo, and the upload step checks it: a square JPEG from 600 × 600 up to 1200 × 1200 pixels, 240 KB or less, with the head 50–69% of the image height and the eyes 56–69% of the height from the bottom. A consular officer can still refuse a photo later, which can delay the appointment. This checker measures each rule and produces a 600 × 600 JPEG that meets them.

  • Checking your photo before the DS-160 upload step.
  • Fixing a photo that the upload tool rejected for size, dimensions or framing.
  • Making a digital file whose framing also matches a printed 2 × 2 inch US passport photo.

What gets measured, and what the fix does

The original file is checked for JPEG format, a square size between 600 and 1200 px, 240 KB or less, sRGB colour and 24-bit depth. A face-landmark model (about 3.6 MB, downloaded once) locates your eyes and chin and estimates the top of your head, then proposes a square crop that puts both inside the allowed ranges. Adjust the frame if you prefer a different crop; head height, eye height, centring, a tilted head and extra faces are all shown in the checklist as you move it. White background swaps the background for white when you save (a 26 MB model, downloaded once). The saved file is 600 × 600 px, sRGB, and compressed to 240 KB or less.

  • If the upload tool reports a problem, its message names the rule; compare it with the checklist.
  • Entering the DV lottery instead? Use the DV lottery photo checker, which requires exactly 600 × 600.

The consulate still decides

The measurements are estimates from face landmarks, and hair against a busy background is the hardest part to place. Official rules also require a photo taken in the last six months, no glasses, a neutral expression, even lighting, and no filters or edits beyond cropping, which software can't fully confirm. Check the State Department's current photo page before you apply.

  • All checklist rows should pass after processing.
  • Zoom in on hair and shoulders if the background was replaced.
  • Upload the downloaded file directly, without editing it elsewhere.

US visa photo checker: questions

What size must a DS-160 photo be?

A square JPEG from 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, 240 KB or less, with the head 50–69% of the height and the eyes 56–69% from the bottom. This tool saves 600 × 600 px, which is within the range.

The DS-160 rejected my photo. Can this fix it?

Usually, if the problem is size, file size, colour or framing. Add the photo, check which rows fail, use the automatic fix and upload the new file. It can't fix a blurred photo, shadows or glasses; retake the photo for those.

Is this the same as the DV lottery checker?

The head and eye rules are the same. The difference is dimensions: DV entries need exactly 600 × 600, while visa uploads accept square photos up to 1200 × 1200. Both tools save 600 × 600.

Can I print the result as a 2 × 2 inch photo?

The framing matches the 2 × 2 inch rules, and 600 px across 2 inches is 300 DPI. For printing several copies on one sheet, use Passport photo maker.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The face is measured and the file is made in your browser; only the models are downloaded, once.
